Budget meal planning for UK supermarket shopping
A recipe’s ingredient cost and the amount you pay at the checkout are different. Plan around the packs you need to buy, as well as the portions you cook.
Start with the checkout cost
If a recipe uses part of a bag of rice, the cost of that portion is only part of the price of the bag. When you do not already own it, you must buy the whole pack. A useful weekly food budget accounts for that initial spend and the ingredients left for another meal.
Check what you already own
Look through the fridge, freezer and cupboard before choosing recipes. Write down ingredients you can use in the coming week. LeanMeals does not currently maintain a pantry inventory for you, so this is a manual check; use your list to avoid buying the same ingredient unnecessarily.
Choose meals with overlapping ingredients
Compare the shopping lists for the recipes you are considering. For example, choosing two dishes that both use carrots can make it easier to use a whole bag than buying several vegetables for separate dishes. Check the total amount needed and avoid buying extra simply because a larger pack has a lower unit price.
Use estimates carefully
LeanMeals has supermarket product and basket-cost tools where pricing data are available. An estimate depends on the product matches, pack sizes and prices recorded in the system. It is not a guaranteed supermarket quote, a live stock check or an order placed with the retailer.
Confirm current prices, promotions and availability before buying. If an ingredient is unavailable, check the recipe before substituting: a swap may change flavour, cooking time and nutrition. Update the plan when you choose a different meal.
Make the budget cover your actual week
Leave room for breakfasts, snacks and ingredients such as oil or seasonings if you need to buy them. Separate your recipe shopping from other household spending so that you can see what the meal plan is costing. Keep a note of your actual receipt and compare it with the estimate after shopping.
A realistic first step
Start with several recipes that use familiar ingredients and fit your cooking schedule. Build a weekly meal plan and shopping list, then compare required quantities with supermarket packs. You can refine the next week using the ingredients you have left.
